Electric Furnace Not Heating? A Troubleshooting Checklist
When an electric furnace runs but won’t heat, the cause is usually one of a handful of things. Work through this list with the power off and locked out before assuming the worst.
1. Check the basics
- Thermostat set to heat and above room temperature?
- Breaker for the furnace tripped? Electric furnaces often have several.
- Filter clogged? Restricted airflow trips safety limits.
2. Check the safety devices
- High-limit switch may have tripped from overheating (often caused by a dirty filter). It can also fail outright.
- Sequencers stage the elements on and off — a bad one leaves elements cold.
3. Check the elements
With power off, inspect each heating element for:
- Broken or sagging coil
- Burn marks or scorching
- No continuity on a multimeter (means it’s failed)
A furnace with one failed element still blows air — just not enough heat.
4. Still stuck?
