No Hot Water? How to Tell Which Water Heater Element Failed

Most residential electric water heaters have two heating elements — an upper and a lower — each with its own thermostat. They don’t run at the same time: the upper element heats first, and only hands off to the lower once it’s satisfied. That’s useful, because which symptom you have points to which element failed.

No hot water at all

This usually points to the upper element (or its thermostat/high-limit switch). If the upper element can’t heat, the system typically never gets to the point of calling on the lower element either, so the tank runs cold.

Hot water that runs out quickly

A partial tank of hot water that runs out fast usually points to the lower element. The top of the tank is heating fine, but the lower portion isn’t being reheated as it’s used.

Confirm it with a multimeter

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to drain the tank to test an element?
No. Testing an element's resistance or continuity only needs the wires disconnected from its terminals — you don't need to drain the tank unless you're removing the element itself.
Can just one element fail while the other is fine?
Yes — that's the most common case. The two elements and thermostats work independently, so it's normal for one to fail while the other keeps working.
Should I replace both elements at once?
Not necessarily. If only one has failed and the other tests fine, replacing just the bad one is enough. Some people replace both if they're the same age, to avoid a second repair soon after.
